Pay it Forward: Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Reading is my first love, above all other hobbies (not above people, just hobbies). I'd bet my sister would say the same (especially now that she sews, 8 hours a day, for a living).

We generally read very different types of books. Once in awhile we hit on the same book, or author, but I can't remember when, if ever, we overlapped.

I mentioned in a post awhile back that I was reading Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, posted a few quotes, and she got hooked! She ordered the book, she started it after me, and she finished first. But then, she is the older sister, so maybe that's okay. I happened to see the book at Half-Priced Books and snatched it up.

I'm finished with the book, she's finished with the book, and we both have an extra copy - In my brain, I'm hearing "Sisters, Sisters......" Since we read them at the same time, we decided to give them away together too, minus the feather boas and dancing routine.

Written by an older woman, Mary Ann Shaffer, her first book ever (and don't you love it when someone does that and it ends up #1 on the NY Times Bestseller List!), and her niece Annie Barrows, it's clean, sweet, precious, dear with a solid story line that involves the island of Guernsey, in the English Channel and World War II.

I stayed up way too late some nights reading as fast as I could, and other times I read slowly on purpose, especially the ending. It's an ending that is perfect to savor in a hot bubble bath, with a glass of wine or diet coke - pick your poison.

You can enter by leaving a comment that will allow me to contact you. You're also quite welcome to go over to my sister, Barb's blog, and enter there too. We'll both draw Monday morning bright and early (although my early is two hours before hers.)

P.S. Happy Birthday sweet Dan. You can open your presents now!

Well, count me in on this. If you both are recommending it, I'd love to read it! When she posts hers, I'm going over to enter there too! (I was just on her site right before here and it's not listed yet - must be the time difference!)
Thanks for the chance to win this.

I am always looking for a good book. And this one sounded so interesting when I read about it earlier on your blog. What a title!

So YES! Throw my name in that hat. And I'm headed over to Barb's to enter there too.

I just read "Sailing to Capri" which I enjoyed. Just FYI. It is by Elizabeth Adler.

Have a great rest of your week!

Hello, Bev! Looks like you've been busy moving all around!

This sounds like a really good book, and I'm needing one to read. (Can a girl ever really get enough good books? I think not.)

Thanks for the chance to win. Happy Birthday to your Dan, too!

This sounds like a good book - I'd love to read it! I'm currently reading "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield which is very good also.

Everyone is talking about this book. Our book club doesn't have it on our 'to be read' list, but maybe it should, from what I hear.

Hi Bev, I had to enter Barb's competition too. I actually toured the underground hospital in Guernsey one summer (I'm originally from England). This sounds like such a good read.
Should I be lucky enough to win both copies (that's never gonna happen) I of course would Pay It Forward and hold my own giveaway. And if I only win one book (that's never gonna happen) I will have a giveaway once I've read it ;-)

As a "new" mom to a 6 year old, I could use a good read that doesn't include rhyming word.

Count me in, Bev. It's not my usual reading fare but it's good to step outside your own reading boundaries occasionally, I think.

I'm adding Melissa at Breath of Life here - she left her comment over at my 'go see' post and I didn't want her left out of the hat.

Kim said...

I'm entering in both places and hope that doubles my chances of winning :-)

I am in dire need of a new book! I have no access to books these days except for the books I brought (all wonderful books I've read and re-read over the years) and ones people send from the U.S.

Shalee said...

Well if it's a book, you know I'm all for it. If the two of you are recommending it, it HAS to be good!

Becky said...

My sister and I love to read, too. She reads much faster and far more.

From everything you've said about this book, I put it on my list and was looking forward to getting it.

But, perhaps it will just show up...if I win.

You are so sweet and thoughtful to share and send out the love.

I will then send it onto my sister, who then gives it to my Mom, who gives it to her sister, who gives it to my cousin....all in PA, by the way.

You're a doll, Bev.

Blessings,
