The Mess is More Than Worth It!

Lucky family who gets to enjoy the changes we've been making here at home.

23 windows have been replaced, in about three days. Thank the good Lord for Leslie's brother-in-law who worked 12 hour days to get it accomplished. I helped :-) I know a lot more about window installation now than I did a few days ago. It's easier than I thought, and I still could not do it. But Alan was a champ and a godsend.

Who knew fresh air smelled better than anything that comes out of a can?!

I'm tickled just watching the curtains blow in the breeze. It's delicious falling asleep, windows open, and the sound of rain falling softly.

Pennsylvania is quick to provide plenty of that background noise. There's a reason it's so green here...

The new cooktop - good grief, why didn't we do that ten years ago? Oh yeah, we couldn't afford it, but why didn't we do it a few years ago? Good lesson learned. In the meantime, I cannot wait to cook supper tonight. The oven is also being replaced later today, and I'm pretty sure I need to make a cobbler, or something bakish. Tonight. I want to use it all I can while we're still here.

The changeout made a bit of a mess. It gave me a good change to scrape yuckyness off the countertops, where it'd been for a good fifteen years. Everything is spic and span now.

If a cooktop can be beautiful, it is. The fan goes from loud to soft, so when Don talks to me while I'm cooking, I might actually be able to hear his soft voice and suck up steam from boiling pasta, all at the same time! Sarah told me about a cookbook that's been out forever - Moosewood Cookbook. She actually got the "New Moosewood Cookbook" but our library only had the original. That's okay, it's new to me! Tonight, I'm thinking pasta with caramalized onion sauce, a green salad, garlic bread baked in that new oven, and watching the second half of the season finale of '24', which was on about three weeks ago. We're not really quite up to speed around here, but it is getting better day by day.

So, any suggestions for a fabulous cookbook to bury myself in? Do you have one you can't live without? Not that I need another one, but that's quite beside the point! These appliances need to be broken in for the next family.

It looks great, Bev; both the windows and the cooktop. I'm so happy for you, and still praying that the house will sell in God's time and still allow you to make your move to TX in a timely manner.

I love almost any Junior League cookbook. Some of the older ones have the best recipes -- you may have to accommodate for the "lard" listed in them! But well worth the effort. :)

The windows look great! I don't even want to think about the cost.... I want a cooktop like that. I had my hubby build me a butcher block cover for my gas top because it always seemed to get dirty even when it wasn't being used. Anyways....... I just recently found an awesome website. It is recipegoldmine.com It has recipes for just about everything. There are even 5 pages of celebrity recipes. I hate to say it but I don't use cookbooks much since it's easier to find recipes on the web.

I'm eyeballin' that cooktop. A similar one was in our house when we bought it 7.75 years ago, and I switched it out for a gas Jenn-air, which is now hopelessly broken on one side leaving me with two burners to prepare meals for 7 (at least). I've found that the down-draft exhaust is not great with the gas burners since it pulls the flame toward the center of the stovetop, resulting in uneven cooking, so I'm re-thinking the gas now. I've always preferred to cook with gas, but I'm now wondering what it would be like to have a smooth-touch electric cooktop since down-draft exhaust is our only option. Your thoughts?

The Ultimate Southern Living cookbook is a fun one that I refer to often... one of those standby cookbooks. Now I'm off to check and see if my library has The Mossewood cookbook:-)

How did you decide on type, cost etc of replacement windows?
Did you get lots of estimates?
We are in the middle of doing the same thing.. 22 windows here.
We moved in 2 years ago and need new windows as no screens and seals broken and very cold in winter.
Did you go with all vinyl or wood-clad vinyl? I am to do the research and am becoming overwhelmed and also the $$$.
Your new owners will love all you are doing.Love the cooktop.

Your windows didn't open before? I can hardly wait for nice weather to fling mine open!

I've been trying to get hubby to agree with me that we need new cupboards for years. And again, it's the same reason. We can't afford it. But I bet if we were moving new cupboards would be in there lickety split. LOL. What is up with that? LOL.

Have fun cooking in that great new cooktop!

Lucky family indeed. It's funny the way we wait to make the changes we would really love to have just before we move out.
Everything looks so fresh and clean Bev. Enjoy it all before you move to your new home.

It's gorgeous! A few years ago we had to replace most of our appliances, including stove, oven, and microwave. That was our vacation. But, you know what? It's worth it not to be aggravated every time you want to cook something. Or unsafe, as the case was with our microwave. Of course I tried to keep using it, but my husband put a stop. ;)

Enjoy whatever you make, friend. And in terms of cookbook suggs, I think Belle is right to refer you to the Junior League. Also, you know how much the Pioneer Woman rocks.

Have a fantastic day. xxxooo

I have just the thing to break in that oven: Artisan Bread in Five Minutes A Day.

What smells better than fresh bread baking? But who wants to go to all the trouble of making it? This book makes it so easy! I'm lovin' it! :-)

I love seeing the windows we've been talking about so much. The new cooktop looks great too. It's a shame you didn't do the windows a few years ago, but I'm glad you're getting to enjoy sleeping with them open now. There's nothing like it.

You know, most of the new recipes I try come from magazines, not cookbooks. But the cookbook section at our library is wonderful and I'll bet yours is too. Last Saturday, I checked out Martha Stewart's Cooking School.

Grrr. i just left you a long comment but lost it when i tried the WP Open ID option. :( so here it is again; short version

Love the Mitford Companion cookbook (Jan Karon) and the Cake Doctor Bible lately (i just read the Mitford one but the Cake Dr. one has been a dangerous pastime!)

Hope the updates attract some ready buyers!
